What to plant and when in your region

Spring (September - November)

As temperatures warm, it's the perfect time to plant:

  • Vegetables: Tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins
  • Herbs: Basil, coriander, parsley, dill
  • Flowers: Sunflowers, zinnias, marigolds, petunias

Spring gardening tasks include soil preparation, pruning winter damage, and gradually increasing watering as the weather warms.

Summer (December - February)

During the hot months, focus on:

  • Vegetables: Sweet corn, beans, capsicum, eggplant
  • Herbs: Lemongrass, mint (in shade), rosemary
  • Flowers: Dahlias, salvia, portulaca, kangaroo paw

Summer gardening involves consistent watering (preferably in morning or evening), mulching to retain moisture, and providing shade for sensitive plants.

Autumn (March - May)

As the weather cools, plant:

  • Vegetables: Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, peas
  • Herbs: Sage, thyme, oregano, chives
  • Flowers: Pansies, violas, sweet peas, snapdragons

Autumn gardening focuses on preparing for cooler weather, collecting seeds, and beginning to reduce watering as temperatures drop.

Winter (June - August)

In the cooler months, you can plant:

  • Vegetables: Kale, spinach, onions, broad beans
  • Herbs: Parsley, chervil, winter savory
  • Flowers: Cyclamen, hellebores, primulas, alyssum

Winter gardening involves protecting plants from frost, planning for spring, and focusing on indoor gardening projects.
